Upcoming Meeting - Budget and Sales Tax Increase

On 7/28/14 the city council will hold its public hearing on the new budget, starting at 7:30PM at city hall.

One of the items that will be discussed at the meeting is whether or not to put a sales tax increase on the November ballot.  The council committee voted to present a 3/8 of a cent tax to the voters.  This can change at the 7/28 meeting.  First, the good goes to the voters to decide.  The amount to be presented to the voters will be decided at the meeting.

This sales tax would be specifically directed at street maintenance, and cannot be used for anything else.  Though there is a definite need for something to be done for the roads maintenance program is the 3/8 of a cent the right amount? Or, are there other options?  Or a combination of options? I will voice my opinion on those questions in future posts on this blog.

What I will say now is let's look at a few situations.
Current sales tax:  8.625%  with a 3/8 increase it goes to 9.0%
Sales tax at 10 Quivira:  Currently 9.125% (includes a .5 CID tax) would go to 9.5%
Sales tax at Shawnee P'kwy Plaza:  Currently 9.625 (includes a 1.0 TDD tax) would go to 10%
